Summary

Vern, Anson, and Cy are resting after their dramatic stop at the end of Runway Two-Niner.

Vern unbuckles his seat belt and turns to Harris. “Okay with you if Jordan watches the right side for a minute?” Harris nods. “I’ll be right back,” says Vern, climbing out of his seat.

Controller #4 says, “Global Two – – welcome home. Do you need a tow, or can you taxi, over?”

Harris looks up at the ceiling.

Controller #4 says, “Global Two, I say again: do you need a tow, or can you taxi, over?”

Harris responds, “We can taxi.”

Vern strides through the sea of passengers cheering him. He gets to the back of the plane and kneels down next to the prone Gwen. Sr. Katherine Grace takes Gwen’s pulse while Dr. Compagno looks on. The nun exchanges places with Vern, who looks down on Gwen.

“How is she, Doctor?” asks Vern.

“I think she’s going to be all right,” says Dr. Compagno.

“Can I speak to her?” asks Vern.

“Go ahead,” says the doctor. Vern leans in.

“Gwen,” says Vern, “it’s Vern. Can you hear me? If you can hear me, squeeze my hand.” Gwen squeezes, weakly.
